open thread

song by Josh Groban

just plain ol' open conversation ...

How did you find "I'd Rather Laugh Than Cry"?

What would you like for me to write about?

I read your blog every day, but i just re-read your "About Me" section. I'm really, really curious about your book...are you really writing one? Have you finished/published it? I'd be really, really interested in reading it, or diaologing about what you're researching.

Just wanted to put that out there!

ckjolly said...

Thanks for the encouragement, Kelli B. Many people ask me about this little project. However, I think few realize the difficult task ahead of me ... a task that could not possibly be whipped out during a few short nights at the computer desk. I imagine the work that I'd like to put into it would take years of interviewing, researching what other ministries or individuals have done, reading what men and women have said on the topic. The problem is that there is not much out there on my specific topic. Women are pulling their hair out in frustration. I'd like to help us find answers. Much of the dialogue, however, on this blog has helped to refine my thoughts on the issue of how women can encourage men in their (men's) leadership roles.

That being said, I'd LOVE to hear your thoughts, Kelli.

Strangely, the more I dig the more I get a similar answer.

"Step back. Do nothing."

I don't know about you. But it seems a bit too simplistic.

Bobby said...

Well, I've heard a lot -- mostly from smart, educated Christian women along the lines of "helping and encouraging" men to be the kind of leaders that they were "created to be helpmates for."

Just for the sake of debate, wouldn't you think that the danger in that is that you are, basically, leading? If you push someone to lead, you are in fact the leader, just not the visible face of leadership.

ckjolly said...

You mean, behind every great man there's a great woman?

I don't know if it's necessarily "leadership" when one enables or removes obstacles to more successful leading. But what does that look like? What obstacles are women able to remove so that men are free to lead?

Unknown said...

Hey folks, hows life over there?

Bobby said...

Hey Hnat, I'm staking claim to some of your territory in my new blog column. Just so you know.

Kelli B said...

Wow, love the dialogue here back and forth..makes me want to dig and and gain some research and understanding from the Bible and from men and women too!

Regardless...I'm still interested in what you come up with. It seems like an age old debate, timeless issue in the church and in marriages, and I have lots of college students who have questioned their roles in relationships. It can be a sticky topic - but it's a necessary one.

Please keep me updated as you progress!

Katie said...

I'm with kelli b and interested in your take on this issue. I guess for me a narrow focus of how gender roles play themselves out in the christian community (chuch, body, whatnot) is the kicker. Not to say that the "church" and the "world" operate in different worlds but in a sense they have different rules and this issue straddles the line of both and rears its head in some of the same ways but with different consequences. So, obvioulsy, I have added nothing to the conversation but just jumped in to say "Me too" in the column of wanting to hear more.

ckjolly said...

You girls have been very encouraging ... thank you.

I'll keep you posted. I hope to do a bit of field research this summer. But no promises.

Anonymous said...

I want to hear more too. Will you still have access to a computer/net over the summer?? I certainly hope so.

ckjolly said...

I'll have my iBook with me ... have you seen the sexy new MacBook?!! ... but who knows about internet access. I'll be keeping a jounal ... just be aware that I may have to post a number of entries at once.

I've found reading your blog a great way to broaden my mind. It’s great to see there are gospel hearted Christians all over the world. It's a real correction to my tendencies toward Elijah syndrome.

Priscilla said...

What is an Elijah syndrome?

ckjolly said...

It's when you feel like you're the only one.

Priscilla said...

Of course! I should have been able to figure that out.

mike said...

Sorry too enigmatic. Here's the passage

Craig Schwarze said...

Someone asked Christine why all these Australian guys were commenting on her blog.

Ok, here is the reason. I've been criticised for being too blunt lately, so doubtless this will offend some.

The reason guys comment on Christines blog is because she is single and pretty (and female). I actually told her to do a test and take down her photo and see if the influx of male commenters dried up. She declined. ;-)

Sad and shallow I know. Ah well.

Of course, now we are here and you are part of our little community, so it wouldn't matter what picture you put up.

Why Australians? Well, I was actually the one who drew Christine into Ozosphere. What happened was I made a throwaway comment to someone that AW Pink was the theologian of choice for young Christian ladies. I then decided I better back that up, so I did a search for blogger profiles with AW Pink.

Christines was one that came up. I started commenting, she commented on my blog and pretty soon she was part of the community.

And thats the story.

ckjolly said...

But I did! Craig! well ... sort of ... but not really ... I put up the picture of the "Old Hag."

ckjolly said...

We like A.W. because he was a Hot Calvinist Guy ...

Anonymous said...

There are lots of Aussie girls who also like to read and comment on Christine's blog. And there are also a lot of Aussie girls who like to read, but don't comment (yet)....I don't think it's because she's single, pretty and female though....it is true that she is all those things.....it's more likely that we've all read Craig's blog and he has brought us across with him...his blog is excellent...and addictive...

also, she has a great blog...interesting thoughts, visually fascinating...who wouldn't want to read it?

Priscilla said...

This is how I found Christine's blog. I was reading my nephew's blog (Jim the 3rd)...he went to college with Christine. I checked out his links and started reading. Thereby, coming across her blog. I was so entertained that I was laughing out loud at some of her stories. The Pensacola clothes snatching story particularly amused me if my memory serves me correctly. I kept coming back. I've found her blog to be interesting, entertaining and informative.

I'm pretty sure that she wonders why an "old lady" like me keeps coming back.

Priscilla said...

Thanks Mike. I am familiar with the story. I really should have been able to figure that out.

ckjolly said...

You mean this story, Priscilla?

mike said...

lol Craigs
Here's my story
I started my own blog recently. In a vague attempt to make it somewhat good I decided to do a little research. I came by Christine's blog through some comments she made on the borg's blog. I also found a number of other people
s blogs who I found interesting. And that is my story.

Priscilla said...

Yes, that was the story.

sajini said...

i found you randomly thorugh SBTS blogs!!!

Unknown said...

I found your blog after harassing craigs, in his comments section. However, I quite enjoy your musings.

How about writing on Biblical Inerrancy or The Problem with Atonement Metaphors? Or maybe a salute to great wrestlers around the world?

Carmen said...

Hey, hey did you see the 'lil red dot in mexico on your little blog map? That was totally me. woohoo!

ckjolly said...

ha ha ... who else could it have been?!!

byron smith said...

Can't quite remember how I got here, think I liked something you said on someone else's blog somewhere.

Anonymous said...

I think I found you through either Jen or Donna... not sure which one. I especially enjoyed your recent commentary on avoiding the benches -- I learned that lesson as well, but I failed to consider the lawn as an alternative. (I personally learned that the SBTS library does NOT need to enter your phone number into the computer when you check out a book... no matter what the guy at the desk tries to lead you to believe.)

Priscilla said...

avoiding benches...ok I'm clueless. Maybe it's because no one was trying to sit with me...or maybe I was already sitting with someone?

Or maybe it's because I'm a geek! LOL!

ckjolly said...

or ... because you're married. The Sem. guys are looking for wives to compliment their future ministries.

I didn't have that problem in college. I sat on the same bench everyday ... it was MY bench. My friends would come and chat with me ... but no weirdos.

ckjolly said...

Ha ... at this year's graduation here at Southern, my friend B. was looking around the audience and he saw a lone woman sitting on the bench under the tree near the library.

he thought it was me.

i guess he thinks i'm a loner.

the thing is ... i am. but ... it wasn't me. i was sitting with my friends who had come up for the occassion.

Priscilla said...

No no no no!!!! I was thnking about when I wasn't married. You know I once was single and I actually remember it!

(I'm not really mad...I just like explaination points)

ckjolly said...

did you attend seminary?

although, i suppose it wouldn't have to be limited to benches at Southern. it could very well happen at other benches across the world. Central Park, for example.

But the weirdness come into play when the guy sits down and whips out his 30 questions and calculator to see how you measure up as a potential partner in life long ministry. If you don't add up ... he moves to the next bench.

To be fair ... I've never seen or heard of that extreme happening.

Priscilla said...

Yikes! It must be a seminary thing!

When I was about 20, I went on a date and then on another with a certain young man. This young man proceeded to tell me that God had revealed to him that I was to be his wife. That scared me off a little bit. Unfortunately I was naive enough to go out with him a couple more times. Then I broke it off. He was so mad he drove me home like a madman. I remember him saying, "Have you prayed about this, Priscilla?!?!!!!!" I told him that I didn't need to because it was fairly obvious that God was not giving me the same revelation. He tried to make me believe that I was going against the will of God.

Needless to say, I never lost any sleep over my decision.

sajini said...

WOW!!!! I have heard a few stories like that. Some people just cant handle rejection!!

Martha said...

Hmmm... wish I could remember who that madman was, Priscilla. It'll come to me eventually... okay, maybe not.

Christine, it looks like you're "probably famous". You're known the world over.

Carmen said...

Boston! Talk about boston. I've always wanted to go there...remember veggie tales..."I've never been to boston in the fall"...nevermind.

Priscilla said...

Carmen...I've never been to Boston in the fall....and come to think of it...I've never thrown my mashed potatoes up against the wall!

Martha...I lied about my age. But his initials were R.W. and our cousin Debbie and I can share horror stories about him. I'm sure it'll come to you now.

Anonymous said...

Please come to Boston.

Kelli B said...

And I'd still like you to write about your research. :) I'm still interested.

Bobby said...

I think I followed your blog from the covenant woman's blog, back when she was just a guitar chick running from Arminian suitors.

Ruth said...

Hey Christine - can you answer my question at 10000 open thread - I've been racking my brains....

Unknown said...

Happy Scripps Day, everyone!

ckjolly said...

I'll keep you posted Kelli B. I'm afraid my research has been moved to the back burner for now. I'm concentrating on my present ministry this summer. But I have not forgotten ... nor have I given up. I'll occassionally post links or thoughts that are relavent to the topic.

mike said...

I'd like to know what the story is behind the name of your blog? Apologies if this question has been asked b4

ckjolly said...

nope ... only one other person has asked me.

Who wouldn't rather laugh than cry? I made the decision a long time ago that crying is generally a waste of time and energy. Plus, I enjoy laughing ... my favorite joke? ...

myself.

Ha!

Plus, it puts people more at ease when you do something embarassing ... eh ... um ... it was funny ... but should we laugh? ... i mean, it might hurt her feelings ...

and then I say:

"BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!"

Hey, i figure i'm going to eventually laugh about it later ... why not start now?!!

Priscilla said...

What are you doing this summer in the pacific northwest?

Unknown said...

Probably what everyone does - crab fishing.

The Librarian said...

Yes, do you have some kind of ministry opportunity over there ckhnat?

Also, you said you have worked as an art teacher? Does that mean you have a teaching degreee?

Over here, you have to get a university degreee to be registered, but I've heard it's not as rigid over ther..

ckjolly said...

Ms. Prisc - I will be interning at a church. I'll keep everyone posted.

Amiel - I have a bachelor's degree in History Education and my minor was in Art Education. I'm currently working on my Master's in Women's Ministry.

I came across your blog while searching for blogs that referenced John Piper. Now I check in every day! Your writing (& video bits) are interesting & fun.
And thank you for introducing me to "Late Tuesday". I really enjoy their music.

Unknown said...

I'm tired of seeing "60 comments" at the bottom of this entry. Now it will say "61 comments."

mike said...

WCSN you have too much spare time... ;)

Unknown said...

It's a full time job just to stay up with all of these Aussie sites.

Unknown said...

You think you can catch Stephen Neal? You think a guy like that comes this close to getting fingered and sticks his head out? If he comes up for anything, it will be to get rid of me. After that, my guess is you'll never hear from him again.

And like that ... he's gone.

Kelli B said...

May I ask where you are pursuing your masters in Women's Ministry? I'm very curious...that sounds right up my alley...

Hope your summer plans are great! I understand about your research being pushed away until later. it happens! I'll be glad to hear more when you get around to it.

Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

http://www.sbts.edu

We're the reformed seminary ... a good chunk of my classmates are Presbyterian. Too few Pressy seminaries that are theologically conservative these days. For example ... there's a Presbyterian seminary a short walk away from us. I hear that it's mostly women studying to go into the pastorate.

ckjolly said...

Yea! It's the 6th of June ... you know what that means!!! I'm leaving today!!!

Sacul said...

Who is World Champ Stephen Neal? He is supposed to be Turkish. Some say his father was German. Nobody believed he was real. Nobody ever saw him or knew anybody that ever worked directly for him, but to hear Christine tell it, anybody could have worked for Neal. You never knew.

so here is how ridiculously silly I am. Every day I check your blog - i see this post. So i think "man, is this girl ever going to write a new post again?" So then today - i scrolled down and saw all your posts. I thought "WHAT! I'm so ridiculous!" i've been missing out on all your posts! :)

Glad I'm on track now...

Your right seeing him sing the song does ruin it.... guess ill just have to find another "christine" song.

ckjolly said...

doesn't it?! he's all wild-eyed with his greasy hair in his face ... sort of scary ... maybe that's what Christine did to him.

something besides Phantom of the Opera. we could write a song ... we've already got a made-for-TV movie in the works "Long-limbed and Driven for Christ: the Christine Hnat Story"

Lorie said...

Hey, C. I'd forgotten you were off having a Summer Adventure!

What's weird is I recognized you at Sojourn before I'd ever met you because I "knew" you from your blog. I think I found yours through Nikki's, too, back in the day.

I've actually run into several people in the real world that look familiar to me because I've seen them in Bloggerland. Very odd feeling. Like a glitch in the matrix or something...

mike said...

Phantom is a little soppy for you... you disappoint me :P

ckjolly said...

oh come off it, Mike. you know you've made the connection before ... you've probably even sung the song while washing windows ... hey! i just realized! that blogger chick has the same name as Christine Daae ... cool. la lala lalalala within my mind ...

The Librarian said...

I LOVE phantomn, I saw the musical on stage in grade 9, I used to listen to the CD over and over. I can't bring myself to watch the movie, because it can't be as good as Marina Pryor.

Phantomn is not sloppy...Well maybe one or two songs are...

"So do you end your days with me?
Or do you send him to his GRAVE?'

not terrribly sloppy...

Yes, he're some great 'Christine' songs for you :)
