my protege

My protege, Carmen, has been living in Greece for three weeks. I'm so proud of her!

(the picture is of her in Mexico ... I love that she's travelling to places I've never been to! That's my girl!)

i don't imagine we'll have a car ... but then heck, I'll see you in Minneapolis! ... I have a feeling that won't be enough, though. i know! YOU can drive 3 1/2 hours and come see ME! It's not like you don't frequently make trips to Philly ...

oh, that reminds me ... I better get on the ball with taking care of arrangements for DG. oops!

I thought you lived in Oz Borg?

I'll answer for the Borg - she is going to the US for 3 months for a spiritual retreat.

It will be bread and water, a monks cowl, a straw mat to lie on, and daily flagellations...

so I LOVE the picture you have on your sight right now. It's awesome. Just so pretty!

Wanted you to know that someone thinks you're beautiful.

thanks Craig - sounds like fun ;)

So I have a question: is it inappropriate for married guys to comment on a female's beauty, assuming the female in question is not his wife?

sajini said...

I think it depends.. Saying she is a pretty or beautiful girl is ok i guess.. Saying her body is hot might not be so cool with the wifey!! :)

The other day, a guy told me that my hair was pretty. It made my entire day, and he was not my husband. I think it is GREAT for men to affirm women - especially if it is in friendship. It's all about motives and how you say it.

Golly christine. I'm blushing. I have so much to live up to! Let me know when we're headed to boston. I'll have new Greece pics up soon. And Shiloh, i'm sorry but i've cut my hair again, so i looks a bit different. But my face should be the same...

I have to admit, I'm always nervous about it; like, I'd like to be able to tell certain women (ahem, Christine, Carmen) that they are pretty, but I don't want them to think that it's anything dodgy, like I'm this married guy coming on to them because he's bored with his wife or something stupid. I love my wife dearly (my beautiful, wonderful wife). It's so hard to know where the line is! Where does appreciating beauty stop and lust/dodgy-ness begin?

Lots of gray area there, but encouragement is wonderful, and you're generally safe complimenting good friends and even regular acquaintances (because they will be able to interpret the remark in light of their knowledge of your character). You could also consider whether the "compliment" in question would make you cringe if you overheard it spoken by a father to his daughter, like "wow, you look hot" (EW!). If the idea of hearing something in a context like that (one that should be decidedly non-sexual and non-flirtatious) gives you the creeps... well, that should be a red flag. Just a thought.

I reckon if I was you Chris I'd run it by ya wifey... just to make sure you weren't making her jealous in a bad way... I agree with you however Carmen and Christine are attractive... but I'm single ;) perhaps.

I think it's nice when a guy (besides my hubby) says "Hey, I like the way you've done your hair." or "You look nice today." It really does make your day... although in different circumstances, it might make me uncomfortable. It's all in a guys approach. Just watch the tone... and girls generally can tell when it's just an innocent compliment (except it is hard to tell on-line.)

back off, Michael. you can't have Carmen!
