They used to have a TV commercial in Germany advertising "Yes" cake bars. Some bloke is having a rotten day AND it appears no one has remembered his birthday when ALL OF A SUDDEN a colleague or girlfriend shows up with a "Yes" crowned with a single lighted candle singing ...

"Hahpy Berssday, to yoo ..."

Yup, they sing the English birthday song ... everyone does. It's just funny how they can't pronounce the "th" sound.

It might just be me, but I can't load the video.

christine, I love you. You make me smile. Lauren says she loves you too. Did you get my parcel in the post?

I bet your mom watches this video about 27 times today! :)) What a sweet idea - filial devotion is a wunnaful thang.

Happy Birthday, Christine's Mom! (and good job on the parenting!)

P.S. I know that German commercial. Hilarious. I always laugh when we have family birthdays in Germany -- can never decide whether to sing normal, or with the German accent though.... I think it's funnier the German way...

And they do the same song with English words in France, too. They can't do /th/ either. Aren't you glad you don't have a th in your name?!?! In France I am Meredeet and in Germany either Merediss or Mereditt. Nice.

To The Borg: When I tried to watch it using Internet Explorer last night it wouldn't load, but when I used Opera today, I had no problem.

I gave it a razz on Firefox and it works. Yeah, Explorer's the problem.

nope ... you're both wrong.

at the time ... it was a private video ... but now it's public.

Craig: When I was still learning how to speak, I would watch American TV shows that were always dubbed into German. The lips never matched the sounds. That's how I learned how to talk. Don't make fun of me!

Carrot cake with cream cheese frosting is my favorite, and I make it sometimes. I also add walnuts.

I heard from a producer that was down in Hobart the other day that the "Happy Birthday" song (the tune, not the lyrics) is actually under copyright, and you have to get the rights to use it in anything (and it's not cheap). There's a team of lawyers who represent the property that spend all their time chasing down and suing people who have infringed the copyright.

Don't believe me? Ever-faithful Wikipedia has the details.

the same article also says that cinema was rising in popularity as a mass medium in the late 1800s!

Yeah Wikipedia ain't "gospel truth", but they're right about the origin & copyright on the Happy Birthday tune.
